Sustainability at Allerton CE Primary

At Allerton CE Primary School we believe every child should learn to understand and respect the world around them.

From exploring and developing biodiversity on our school site, to working with our community to reduce pollution in our local area and engaging in purposeful projects in the curriculum, we seek to inspire and inform our pupils and families to be environment-conscious citizens of the future.

Eco-Schools Award Distinction

Our Eco-Ambassadors were proud to lead the school to attain Eco-School Status (Distinction 2024-25) tackling litter, energy-use and showing us what we can do to protect marine animals.

Sustainability was a School Development Goal in 2024-25. Now it’s part of our daily life.

Actions so far:

All lighting is now energy-efficient LED lights saving money on our energy bills.

Electric Vehicle (EV) use  is encouraged among staff and visitors with charging points in the

school carpark.

We are committed to low-wattage and low emission products to reduce the school’s carbon footprint.

We encourage digital alternatives, efficient practices to reduce paper and laminating usage across school.

We reduce, reuse and recycle. Art and DT outcomes aim to use recycled materials and to reuse components to make us a more sustainable school.

Our ECO-Committee and Sustainability Lead shares knowledge with the whole school. We are working to embed environmental responsibility into the school culture.

Biodiversity Project - We installed a trail cam and nest boxes showing us the wealth of birds and mammals around school. Year 3 take care of our hedgehog homes.

We installed a Ridan Composter to reduce organic waste and to promote composting. We use the compost on our school allotment.

Food waste from our school lunches is collected, monitored and used for composting and energy production.

School lunches have a vegetarian option. Our ACE Cooks Food DT curriculum promotes meat-free cooking.

Nourish, our Food Club for all our families, stocks surplus food from Fareshare and HisChurch. We’re aiming to help with the cost of living and to reduce food waste to combat the role of the food system in climate change.

Travel surveys led to us providing bike racks and to promoting eco-friendly transport.

We took part in the Ward Wide Walk to School Week alongside all our local primary schools and local climate action hub, Alwoodley 2030. Our pollution monitor allowed us to show real impact on pollution and congestion across the whole area.

Bike MOTs in 2025 and 2026 serviced close to 100 bikes each time. Bike Futures led bike confidence training for our Year 2 children and supported year 5 to cycle safely around the local area through bike maintenance, safe route planning and cycle training.

Wow Travel Tracker in class promotes active travel to school.

We are currently developing our new Climate Action Plan to plan for and manage sustainable practice to minimise our impact on climate change.

Room 17 supports families through visits from Green Doctor, Alwoodley 2030 Warmer Homes and through hosting the monthly Alwoodley Repair Cafe. Fix it, don’t ditch it!

And we’re working towards having solar panels installed!

We're currently updating on our Climate Action Plan with our ongoing steps.
