In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), we relate the Mathematical aspects of the children’s work and learning from the White Rose maths scheme, to the Development Matters statements and the Early Learning Goals (ELG). Mathematics development involves providing children with opportunities to practise and improve their number skills and for the children to develop building blocks to excel mathematically. The revised development matters guidance (July 2021) asks for the environment to provide frequent and varied opportunities for the children to learn and develop not only number skills but also spatial reasoning skills across all areas of Mathematics. We continually observe and assess children against the criteria set out in this guidance as well as working through the White Rose maths scheme, ensuring that the children are building strong foundations in Maths.
